Firmware is the operating system of a Lightform embedded product.
Notice for LF2 and LF2+ users (only):
- A firmware update is required to correct potential fire risk and device damage. Please complete the update procedure to safely update your device to the latest firmware version (2.4.1), and do not otherwise use the device until you perform a firmware update. See more about this issue here.
Before you begin
Your Lightform device's firmware has a host of features that allow your device to talk to the Lightform Creator Software, take scans, and do other cool stuff. It is very important to keep your firmware and software updated.
Note
- Using the latest version of Creator Software without updating your device firmware will cause many features not to work. Please make sure you are on the latest version of Lightform Creator Software when updating your device firmware.
- To update the Lightform device firmware, both your computer and Lightform device must have access to the internet. We recommend doing this process on a stable, secure network, and not on-site at an installation.
As of 2022, the latest firmware versions are as follows:
- LF1 - 2.8.2.255
- LF2 / LF2+ - 2.4.1.0
- LFC - 2.1.22.255
How to update the Lightform device firmware
- Power on the device
- Open Lightform Creator
- On the home page, it lists the Lightform Creator version. Please make sure you are on the latest version of Lightform Creator.
- Click the Control Device button — this will direct you to the Control Page
- Click the Change Device button in the top left corner
- If your device has been previously connected to your internet, wait a few minutes for the device to appear in the list.
- Otherwise, click Pair Device to follow the instructions for pairing the device to Wi-Fi or use an ethernet connection.
- Once you've connected, turn on the test card to confirm your device is online.
- In Lightform Creator, go to the Control Device page and click Test Card O
- On the projected test card, you should see a green border and Connected at the top, indicating you are connected to the internet.
- In Lightform Creator, go to the Control Device page and click Test Card O
- If a firmware update is available, when you start your project, Lightform Creator will prompt you with the firmware update workflow. The update can take up to 25 minutes, please do not unplug your device during the process.
- Confirm your device is on the new firmware version by referring to the control page in Lightform Creator or your test card.

Troubleshooting Firmware Update
Error Messages
If you receive the error "the device could not contact the update servers":
- This can happen if you are trying to update the firmware in an unsupported country. If outside of our supported countries, due to local regulation and network specificities, we can’t guarantee the Lightform will be fully functional. We have seen issues with updating firmware in China for instance due to the local regulations there.
- This can also happen if your connection is very slow or unstable. Please try using a direct ethernet connection or pairing to another network with a stronger connection.
If you receive the error "device never came online after update":
- This could mean that you lost connection to your network connection during the update. Restart your Lightform Device, confirm you are on a stable and supported network and try again.
- The device didn’t actually reboot after the update, it just stayed powered off (occasionally with LF2/2+). If this is the case, please reboot your device and try again.
- The device joined a different network when it re-started up — or more generally, the computer running Lightform Creator and the device are on different networks after the firmware update. Make sure the computer is on the network the device was paired to and review the firmware version on the control page to see if the firmware update did actually complete. If you are still on an older version of firmware, please try again.
Other issues
- You may not be auto-prompted to update your firmware if you received your device a long time ago, and are just getting set up.
- If you are using Windows and do not see any discoverable devices on the network, Windows Defender may be interfering.
Checking the Firmware Version
- Open Lightform Creator
- Click the Control Device button — this will take you to the Control Page
- Click the Change Device button in the top left corner
- Select the device by name
- Look for the label Firmware Version
Checking the Lightform Creator Version
Note
It is very important that you are on the latest version of Lightform Creator Software when updating to the latest version of device Firmware.
If you are on an older software version and update the firmware, you will run into issues scanning, publishing, etc.
- Open Lightform Creator
- Check the home page for the version number or go to the Lightform --> About Lightform Menu

Same issue on my side / meme probleme de mon cote....
So Lightform is telling me that the device needs to update the firmware, and it tells me to hit continue to update, but continue isn't highlighted, and I can't click it, then it goes offline, even thought the test card is green and connected to the same network as my laptop.
Slowly progressed up to 100%, but an update failed notice appeared instead, saying it never came back online after update. Now LF2 is not booting anything but a black screen.
Hi guys !
I am certainly have internet connection, also on my network controller, i see LF2 connected to internet ,acquaried DNS and gw and all correctly.
But somehow can't download the related firmware.
Can you double check at your side, if firmware server working ?
At the other hand i have 2x 1GB Fiber connection with two different ISP.
So i am %100 confident problem is not my internet or wifi.
Thanks
Firmware will not update

Same happening here: the device could not contact the update servers. please verify that the device is connected to the internet.
My Internet is very fast and I'm based in Japan.
Yah, same problem here. I'm definitely connected, paired, etc . Firmware will not update, just keep getting the "could not contact servers, verifiy if connected to the internet" urgghhh. Anyone have any answers on the reason why it does this?
Exactly the same issue as all have described above. Please supply a fix if anyone knows how.
